Kodaikanal Attracting Tourists Since Colonial Era

Kodaikanal has been a favourite hill station of many tourists and honeymooners since the colonial era. Established in the mid-nineteenth century by the British as a place that offered refuge from tropical diseases and soaring temperatures of summers, this region has become a world-famous travel destination today. The Kodaikanal climate is what attracts most of its visitors, and it is rightly called the 'Princess of Hill Stations' considering its long history as a summer retreat. Kodaikanal has not only managed to attract plenty of tourists from different corners of the globe, but has also contributed immensely to the development of local economy.

Many scenic natural attractions can be found while touring this hill station. Among them is the Kodaikanal Lake, which is an artificial lake built during the mid-nineteenth century. Visitors to the lake can enjoy boating with the help of row boats and Pedalos that can be hired from the club located close to it. Among the other Kodaikanal attractions is Bear Shola Falls, the tall waterfalls located in a reserve forest. Kurinji Andavar Murugan Temple would also make for a great visit, as it is popular for its Kurinji flower that blossoms only once in every twelve years. Silver Cascade, Pillar Rocks, Kodaikanal Solar Observatory and Bryant Park are other famous attractions that can be visited during a holiday in the hill station.

Air travellers can reach this hill station either from Coimbatore International Airport or Madurai Airport with the help of public transport or by hiring private vehicles. For those travelling by trains, the nearest railway stations are Palani, Kodaikanal Road and Dindigul. People travelling by road in order to reach the hill station can get frequent buses from Madurai Aarappalayam Bus Stand. The resorts in Kodaikanal provide excellent accommodations to the tourists in the form of elegantly designed rooms and suites.
